The park itself has an abundance of wildlife, from Buzzards to Bison, it
is also steeped in history from the travels of Robert Louis Stevenson with his donkey Modestine in 1878,
whose trail can be traced, the silk trade and the mining of
gold etc. to the religious wars , Le Pont de Montvert is where
the abbot Du Chayla the notorious torturer of Protestants was murdered
so sparking off the Camisard Revolt. La Garde Guerin where 31 Knights
held the hilltop overlooking the stupendous gorges of the Chassezac, thus
ensuring the security of the Regordane road, the Inn of the same name
welcomes visitors. The village of L'Hopital which took its name from the
famous Commanderie des Hospitaliers of the Knights of Malta, whose
crosses engraved in the rocks can still be seen.
Among the many things to do in the area are; hiking, cycling both road
and mountain, canoeing, fresh water swimming, fishing, horse riding, site seeing, including; Pont du Gard, Cirque de Navacelles, Mont Lozere and its famous chestnut cake to be enjoyed with coffee in the café at the top, Pont d'Arc, Gorges de L'Ardeche, Gorges du Tarn, and many Chateaux, Nimes is only an hour and a bit away and is worth a visit. The Bamberoozerie near St Jean du Gard is worth a look, it is full of exotic trees and plants and you can buy many things made from bamboo including bicycles All of these places of
interest have their own web-sites, In the season
there are many fetes and concerts, mostly free,
Les Fumades, a Roman Spa, has a casino, bars, dancing, boule
competions, artisan markets, concerts and much more.
