Within an easy day’s drive there are many beautiful places to visit.
Take a trip to the ancient town of Cahors. Cahors was the the birthplace of Leon Gambetta, one of the founders of the Third Republic and he is honoured by a large statue in the centre of the new part of the town. Visit the famous Pont Valentré, over the River Lot, reputedly one of the finest bridges in the world and wander around the streets of the old town.
Visit Maurs on a Thursday morning for the weekly market. You’ll find stalls lining the streets where local farmers come to sell their produce and villagers from all around come to buy and meet up with their friends.
A holiday in this part of France is not complete without a visit to Rocamadour, a village dating back to the 12th century, perched on a 150m high cliff with fantastic views over the surrounding countryside.
You could also take in Loubressac, one of the “Jolies Villages de France”, a tiny hilltop village with breathtaking views and maybe Padirac where a giant hole in the ground appeared in the early part of the 20thC. Further exploration revealed a vast network of caves which you can explore on foot and by boat.
About a 40 minute drive away is the town of Figeac. Situated on the River Célé, Figeac has a wealth of old buildings dating back to the 12th century. There are museums and an enlarged replica of the Rosetta Stone dedicated to Jean-Francois Champollion, the Egyptologist who managed to decipher the language of the Pharoahs and was born in Figeac in 1790. |
